Bec Hardy Wines

Bec Hardy Wines on Hunt Road is a family-owned cellar door with sweeping lawns, native gardens, and a dog policy written into the menu itself: a dedicated grazing bowl for visiting dogs, right alongside the cheese platters. The family's own dog Churchill is often around the property, so yours is in established company. Open daily 10am to 4pm.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor lawns, courtyard and shaded dining areas, but not inside the cellar door building, and on-lead is the rule throughout. The kitchen's dog grazing bowl keeps a dog occupied through a longer tasting; it has proved popular enough that other Vale cellar doors have copied it. Bring your own water bowl as a backup, and pick a shaded patch on warm days.

Max: a grazing bowl of my own while the humans argued about shiraz. Whoever put dog food on a winery menu deserves a medal.

The vibe

The range runs from easy-drinking whites, including a pinot gris that suits the lawns-on-a-Saturday mood, through to premium McLaren Vale shiraz from the Pertaringa label. The Kitchen at Bec Hardy serves grazing platters and picnic-style plates daily, so a tasting can stretch into a proper lunch without moving the car.

Getting there and parking

The cellar door sits on Hunt Road, a few minutes from the McLaren Vale township, with parking on site. Weekday afternoons are the calm window on the lawns; weekends fill with the usual Vale traffic, so book The Kitchen ahead if lunch is the plan.

Hunt Road and the wider Vale hold plenty of dog-friendly pours: S.C. Pannell welcomes dogs in its outdoor areas, Hugh Hamilton Wines is close by, and DogRidge Vineyards in McLaren Flat lets dogs join even inside.
