Barrecas Wines

Barrecas Wines is a small, family-run cellar door in the Preston Valley near Donnybrook, built around 100 percent estate-grown Italian varietals. Dogs on lead are welcome in the outdoor cellar door area, which is a large part of the appeal for a relaxed tasting stop on a drive through the valley.

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor cellar door area, a relaxed, rustic space suited to a lead-on visit. Keep dogs close and settled so other tasters have room too. As a small, family-operated venue there is no confirmed on-site water bowl, so bring your own water for your dog and check current rules at the cellar door on arrival.

Worth knowing

Barrecas focuses on Italian reds, Shiraz, Barbera, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Malbec, alongside estate-bottled olive oil, with fortifieds and muscat in the range. It is a genuinely low-key, family cellar door rather than a polished tourist stop, and opens 11am to 4pm on most days apart from Tuesday and Wednesday.

Max: keep the lead on around the tasting tables, this is a working cellar door with breakables at dog height.

Getting there

The winery is at 4454 Donnybrook-Boyup Brook Road, Brookhampton, about 40km southeast of Bunbury and a short drive from Donnybrook. Parking is unsealed gravel immediately next to the cellar door and vineyard, with plenty of room.

Close by with the dogs

In Donnybrook, Ruby's Brew covers the coffee stop and Sips and Treats the casual drink, both nearby. The Apple Fun Park in town has space for an on-lead walk, though dogs stay off the play equipment, and Glen Mervyn Dam up the road is a good walk near water. For another tasting, Oakway Estate at Paynedale also welcomes dogs on leash.
