On-lead park-wide, with one fenced 2.5 ha off-leash dog park at Mussel Pool East.

Whiteman Park sits about 20 minutes from the Perth CBD, and this 8.4 km loop takes in its central hub, running past the Bennett Brook Railway stops at Village Junction and Zamia Station. It is flat, sealed and easy underfoot. The rule that shapes the day is simple: the whole park is on lead, with one exception, and that exception is fenced.

The walk. AllTrails measures the loop at 8.4 km, rated moderate on distance rather than terrain, and puts it at two to two and a half hours. The surface is sealed the whole way and suits prams and bikes. It threads banksia woodland and open grassland, and you will very likely walk past grazing kangaroos.

The rules. The park is managed by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage on behalf of the WA Planning Commission, and dogs must be on lead everywhere except inside the fenced dog park. No other pets are permitted in the park at all, not cats and not birds. Do not let your dog chase the kangaroos, and keep clear of nesting areas.

Max's takegerman shepherd
Kangaroos here graze close to the path and will not move off for you. A big roo turns and fights a dog rather than running. Short lead, wide berth, keep walking.

The off lead option. The dog park at Mussel Pool East runs to 2.5 hectares, fully fenced, with a separate section for dogs under 10 kg, shaded seating and an obstacle course. It closes on alternate Thursdays for maintenance, so check before you plan the walk around it.

Getting there. Drive. The park entrance is on Drumpellier Drive, and the useful parking for this loop is Car Park 23 at Mussel Pool East or the spaces near the Village. Free biodegradable bags are stocked at the visitor centre, the dog park and the Lord Street entrance. Toilets and drinking fountains are in the Village and at Mussel Pool East.

Nearby with the dogs. Whiteman Park Fenced Dog Park is the off lead area itself. Annies Landing Fenced Dog Park is the nearest alternative, The Lounge Room On James and Toe Beans Bassendean handle coffee, and Discovery Parks Swan Valley is the local stay.

When to go. Early on a weekday. Weekends between 10am and 3pm are busiest, and school holidays fill the Village end. The loop is largely exposed, so summer means walking at first light or not at all. Good for big runners who want distance without hills.
