Coucal Trail

Coucal Trail is an easy, mostly flat out-and-back walk of around two kilometres through the Pullen Reach Bushland Reserve in Westlake, tracing riparian and dry rainforest along the Brisbane River, on lead the whole way.

The walk. Partially paved with gravel sections, and gentle enough for most fitness levels. Access is at the end of Balaton Street.

Leash status. Dogs must stay on a lead and under effective control throughout, as this is a nature reserve. Stick to the designated walking tracks; dogs are not permitted on the adjacent mountain bike-only trails.

Water. A tap is available at the Loffs Road entrance, but there is no water along the trail itself, so carry a bowl for longer walks.

Watch-outs. Bag and remove waste rather than leaving it, and keep dogs from chasing the local birdlife. Paths can turn muddy near the river after heavy rain, so plan for wet paws.

Getting there. Main access is at the end of Balaton Street, Westlake. Street parking is generally available but can be tight at peak times. Bus routes serve the wider Westlake and Riverhills area, though driving to the trailhead is more practical.

Nearby with the dogs. Little Hippo Cafe on Westlake Drive is a short drive from the trailhead and welcomes dogs. Further out, The Curious Caravan Cafe in Pullenvale and Goodness Gracious Cafe in Graceville both have dog-friendly outdoor seating.

Mid-week mornings or late afternoons are the quietest times, with Sunday and Tuesday afternoons the busiest. Check conditions after rain before you head out, since the riverside sections can get slippery.
