The Aboriginal Heritage Walk Trail

The Aboriginal Heritage Walk Trail at The Spectacles is a 5 km loop around the northernmost wetland of Beeliar Regional Park in the City of Kwinana, an easy bush walk that takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Dogs are welcome but must stay on-leash the entire way, which is the main factor in deciding whether this trail suits you and your dog.

The walk

The flat loop runs over dirt track and shaded boardwalk, accessed directly from the gravel car park on McLaughlan Road. Interpretive panels along the route share Whadjuk Noongar cultural heritage alongside notes on the local flora and fauna, and the scenery moves between paperbark woodland, banksia forest and open wetland, with the Biara Bird Hide and a small wooden platform as focal points.

Leash status

On-leash at all times, no exceptions. The trail skirts fragile wetland habitat with plenty of birdlife, so keeping your dog on the established path matters as much as the lead itself. If you want an off-leash session afterwards, the fenced peace park at Parmelia is the nearest place to let go of the lead.

Water and terrain

There is no drinking water on site, so carry enough for you and the dog. Track surfaces are mostly firm dirt and boardwalk, with sandy stretches in summer and damp or muddy patches after heavy winter rain; pick a dry day if you want to avoid standing water.

Max: keep your dog close on this one. Wetland trails in WA mean snakes are a real possibility on warm days, so stay on the path and walk the cooler hours.

Getting there and parking

Take the Anketell Road exit off the Kwinana Freeway, head west, and continue to the dedicated gravel car park on McLaughlan Road. Public transport access is limited, so driving is the practical option. There are no toilets at the trailhead, so plan that stop before you arrive.

When to go

Autumn through spring is the ideal window, with wildflowers in the banksia sections and comfortable walking temperatures. Early morning is best in summer, both for the heat and the birdlife around the hide.
