Lithgow State Mine Heritage Park Loop

The Lithgow State Mine Heritage Park loop wanders through old coal-mining grounds in State Mine Gully, north of Lithgow, where rusted relics sit among native bush. Dogs can come, but only on a lead.

Leads and limits

The heritage park falls within Lithgow City Council, and dogs must be on a lead throughout the grounds to protect visitors and the heritage structures.

Keep the walk to the heritage precinct. Further up State Mine Gully Road the land becomes the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area and similar reserves, where pets are not allowed.

The track

Expect natural earth, dirt singletrack and gravel maintenance tracks rather than made paths. Open clearings and lawns alternate with shade from the gully's trees.

Before you go

There is parking at the heritage park itself. Bins are few and sit near the museum and car park, so carry bags and pack everything out.

There are no dog water stations along the loop, so bring water and a bowl.

Max: Stay inside the heritage grounds. The bush further up the gully is conservation land, and dogs are not allowed there.

Make a day of it

For off-lead time, Bowenfels Off Leash Dog Park is close by, and Lake Pillans in Lithgow is an on-lead wetland walk on boardwalks and circuit paths.

Outside museum opening hours the grounds are quiet, which suits dogs that prefer a calm, unhurried sniff.
