Bowenfels Off Leash Dog Park

Bowenfels Off Leash Dog Park is a fully fenced, double-gated off-leash area right on the Great Western Highway at Bowenfels, next door to a children's playground on Lithgow's western side. It has a separate small or timid dog section, so it works whether you have a boisterous kelpie or a nervous rescue.

The dog setup

The ground is natural turf with agility ramps and obstacles for dogs that want a proper workout, bench seating for owners, and a drinking water tap, though bring a bowl as a backup in case the tap is not running. Waste bins and bag dispensers are on site. Dogs stay on-leash in the surrounding public area and only run off-leash inside the fenced boundary, under voice control the whole time. Supervise at all times, use the double gates carefully so other dogs do not slip out, and keep the small and timid dog section for dogs that actually fit the size profile.

Max: Confirm both gates are shut before letting anyone off-leash. It is double-gated for a reason, and the small-dog section is worth using if your dog gets overwhelmed easily.

Getting there

The park is right off the Great Western Highway with parking next to the grounds, making it an easy stop by car for anyone passing through or staying in Lithgow. A walking approach runs along paths by Farmers Creek if you are coming from nearby streets, and Lithgow's town centre is only a few minutes' drive away.

Make a day of it

The Lithgow Dog Park and Recreation Area is the bigger off-leash ground a few minutes east, and Lake Lyell Recreation Park at South Bowenfels adds lakeside camping and walking for a weekend with the dog. Lithgow's main street cafes generally have outdoor seating that works with a leashed dog; confirm pet policies directly when booking stays around town.
