Lithgow Dog Park and Recreation Area sits on Montague Street a few minutes from the Lithgow town centre, a fully fenced off-leash park running alongside Farmer's Creek. Secure fencing, grass, mature shade trees and a concrete path make it the most practical containment option in town for letting a dog run properly.

Leash status

This is a Lithgow City Council designated off-leash exercise area, open around the clock, with off-lead play allowed strictly inside the fenced enclosure. Enter through the double-gated system and shut both gates behind you. Stay in the park with your dog, keep them under voice or hand control, and leash up and leave if any dog turns aggressive. Outside the fence, including the creekside path and banks, the lead goes back on.

Max: the creek edge is where the fencing gives up. If your dog swims or wanders, recall needs to be rock solid before the second gate opens.

Water and terrain

Inside the enclosure there is open grass for running, trees for shade and a concrete pathway tracing the creek line. A fresh water tap serves the dogs, bag dispensers and bins are usually stocked, and benches plus picnic tables give owners somewhere to settle. The ground holds up well in dry weather; expect muddy patches along the creek after rain.

Getting there and parking

The park is roughly a five-minute drive from central Lithgow, with free street parking along Montague Street that rarely fills. Walking in from nearby residential streets is easy, but Lithgow's bus services are limited, so driving or walking are the reliable options.

Worth knowing

The site is unfenced along the creek edge, so supervise dogs that like water. Bring your own bags as a backup even though dispensers are usually stocked, and plan toilet stops in town since facilities at the park itself are limited. It suits sociable dogs best; the park regularly hosts local regulars at busy times.

When to go

Mid-morning and early afternoon on weekdays are the quiet windows. Weekends and after work draw the crowd, which is a plus for social dogs and something to avoid for shy ones.
