Lake Pillans

Lake Pillans pairs quiet wetland water with the ruins of Lithgow's historic blast furnace next door, and the paths are easy enough for almost any dog. Lithgow City Council asks for dogs to stay on a lead throughout.

The walk

The route follows paved shared paths and timber boardwalks across the wetlands. The boardwalks were rebuilt after earlier bushfires, and the paths now link with the first stage of the Farmers Creek shared pathway.

Birdlife is the main attraction on the water, with open grassy areas and the occasional shade tree around the edges.

Before you go

Free parking is available near the Inch Street access points. You will find benches, picnic tables and general park bins, but carry bags and fresh water for your dog.

Max: Boardwalks and birds make a tempting mix. Keep the lead short on the timber sections.

Make a day of it

If your dog needs a proper run after all that lead work, the fenced Lithgow Dog Park and Recreation Area is close by.

Who it suits

The stable, even surfaces suit older dogs and owners with limited mobility. It is a calm, short stroll rather than a workout, and it is generally less crowded than the big national parks in the region.
