Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve

Alex Wilkie Nature Reserve protects a rare patch of Melbourne's sandbelt heathland in Springvale South, just over the line from Noble Park North. Dogs are welcome on a lead, but the reserve only opens on set days.

Opening times

The reserve opens on Fridays from 9 am to 3 pm and on the third Sunday of the month from 10 am to 5 pm. It is closed on public holidays and through winter, from June to August.

On the track

The City of Greater Dandenong manages the reserve, and dogs stay on a lead throughout to protect the plants and wildlife. Formed gravel tracks and newly upgraded accessible paths wind past native heath and interpretive signs.

Inside, there are drinking taps with a dog bowl during open hours. For perimeter walks outside those hours, carry water.

A trail links the reserve with Coomoora Woodland, so you can extend the outing under mature trees.

Max: Check the calendar before you drive over. Outside Fridays and the third Sunday, the reserve is closed.

Park near the Alex Nelson Reserve entrance off Harold Road, where you also find bins, picnic tables and shaded grass.

For off-lead time afterwards, head to Barry J Powell Reserve Dog Off Leash Area in Noble Park North.

It suits calm dogs and owners who enjoy wildflowers and birdlife more than a long run.
