Frederick Wachter Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Frederick Wachter Reserve on Bloomfield Road gives Keysborough a proper fenced off-lead run: a large enclosure in the southern part of the reserve, just north of the tennis courts, with good grass coverage, mature shade trees and secure double-gate entry. It draws a regular local crowd and has the space for a genuine run rather than a token circle.

The dog setup

The enclosure is fully fenced with double gates, so it works for dogs still tightening up their recall. Once inside, dogs are off lead under effective voice or visual control at all times; dogs must be leashed to pass through the gates and anywhere else in the reserve. Council rules apply as usual: pick up after your dog, leash up and leave if a dog turns aggressive, and dogs in season are not permitted. Rubbish bins sit near the entrances and water is normally available, though a backup bottle in the car never hurts.

The vibe

This is a friendly neighbourhood park with shaded seating and benches under the trees, plus the odd ball or toy left behind by regulars. The wider reserve wraps around it with a playground, a walking track, BBQs and sports ovals, so it is easy to split the visit between an off-lead play session and an on-lead lap of the perimeter.

Max: If the pen gets crowded, take a leash lap of the sports ovals and come back once it thins out.

Getting there and parking

The address is 194 Bloomfield Road, Keysborough, with free parking right at the reserve. The park also fronts Kingsclere Avenue. Several bus routes serve the area, including the 811, 812 and 813, and Yarraman station is roughly 1.8km away if you are walking in. Toilets are available at the sports pavilion, though they can be locked when no games are on.

When to go

Weekend mornings and weekday late afternoons after school and work are the busy windows. Weekday mornings are usually quiet, which suits a shy dog or one working on its manners around others.
