Frederick Wachter Reserve on Bloomfield Road is one of Keysborough's four dog parks and one of its friendliest, with a large fully fenced off-leash area, good grass coverage and secure fencing. It draws a regular local crowd and has plenty of room for a proper run.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash inside the fenced enclosure but must stay under effective voice control. The fencing is fully secure, so it works for dogs still learning their recall. Owners must clean up; free bag dispensers are usually stocked. Keep an eye on your dog's play during busy periods, and supervise young children in the mix.

What's there. A water fountain with a dog bowl, shaded seating and benches, mature trees, and free on-site parking. The adjacent sports pavilion has public toilets, though these can be locked when no games are on.

Getting there. The address is 194 Bloomfield Road, Keysborough, with parking right at the reserve. Several bus routes serve the area, including the 811, 812 and 813. The nearest train station is Yarraman, roughly 1.8km away.

Nearby with the dogs. The Nest at Waterways cafe is about 650 metres away with outdoor seating and lake views. 3 Sons Cafe in Keysborough welcomes dogs in its outdoor dining area. Both make an easy add-on to a park visit.

If the pen gets too crowded for comfort, walk a lap of the surrounding sports ovals on-leash and come back when it thins out.

When to go. Weekend mornings and weekday afternoons after school and work are the busiest. Weekday mornings are usually quiet, which is the better bet for a shy dog or one in training.
