Fotheringham Reserve is a large open reserve on the Noble Park North/Dandenong boundary, with remnant River Red Gum woodland and a dedicated off-leash area bordering Yarraman Creek. At around 16 hectares it has real room to move, making it a good pick for bigger dogs or anyone who wants space rather than a tight fenced yard.

The rules. This is a Greater Dandenong City Council off-leash area, so dogs must stay under effective control by voice command or hand signal, and within 50 metres of the person walking them. Carry a leash at all times. If a club or school sport is in progress on the ovals, dogs must be leashed. Keep at least 20 metres from playground equipment, and from the cycling path unless a fence of 1.2 metres or higher separates you. Clean up after your dog using the provided bins.

What's there. Open off-leash green space, access to the Eastlink Trail and local walking paths, a playground, picnic areas and barbecues near the reserve, plus street parking on Alexander Avenue.

Getting there. The reserve is at 4 Alexander Avenue. Yarraman train station is about 900 metres away, and bus routes 800, 811 and 812 stop nearby. Street parking is available on-site.

Nearby with the dogs. There is no dog-friendly cafe directly on the reserve doorstep, so it is worth checking outdoor seating at suburban cafes in Noble Park proper before you head over. If you need pet-friendly accommodation, motels along Dandenong-Frankston Road are around five minutes' drive; confirm pet policy directly before booking.

Weekdays and Saturday evenings tend to be quiet. Tuesday and Thursday evenings see moderate use. Because the reserve is large, there is usually enough room to keep your distance from other dogs even when it is busier.
