Smiths Creek Reserve

Smiths Creek Reserve threads a strip of bushland through Leumeah on the edge of Campbelltown, and it feels like a proper bushwalk without leaving the suburbs. It is protected bushland, so dogs stay on a lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Campbelltown City Council allows dogs on the reserve's tracks, but only leashed. The corridor shelters endangered Shale-Sandstone Transition Forest, and koalas are sometimes spotted resting in the eucalypts.

The walk

Expect dirt fire trails and earthy, grassy tracks rather than pavement, with creek lines and patches of open grassland along the way. The heavy canopy keeps much of the walk shaded.

Recent upgrades added a green link through the local Scout Hall, joining the Leumeah precinct to the reserve's mix of short and longer tracks.

Getting started

There is no formal car park. Most people use street parking near the access points, such as Bungonia Road. Dedicated dog water and bins are scarce on the bush tracks, so bring water and bags.

Max: Koalas and birds live in this canopy. Keep the lead short and your dog on the track.

Make a day of it

Afterwards, head into Campbelltown for a coffee at Sugar Mint Cafe.

The shade makes this a good summer option for dogs who like to sniff rather than sprint.
