Chelsea Road Reserve

Chelsea Road Reserve is a quiet bushland reserve in Ransome on Brisbane's bayside, where eucalypt forest, paperbark forest and saltmarsh meet the edges of Lota and Tingalpa creeks. Wide, well-maintained gravel trails run generally level and easy underfoot, making it a practical on-leash walk rather than an off-leash playground.

Leash status

Dogs are permitted on the trails but must stay on a leash at all times to protect the local wildlife, including the birdlife that draws the birdwatchers. This is a strict on-leash reserve, so it is not the right venue if your dog needs off-leash exercise; the nearby bayside parks cover that instead. Carry waste bags and take them out with you.

The walk

Expect an easy, low-grade amble across gravel surfaces, with circuits like the Figure 8 combining sections through eucalypt and paperbark forest before opening toward the saltmarsh and creek environment. It suits older dogs and shorter outings, and the level ground keeps it comfortable for owners too. The train line passes close by in places, so a startle-prone dog may need a moment to settle when a service goes through.

Pepsi: bring binoculars as well as the lead. The saltmarsh fringes are the birdwatching draw here, and a quiet dog on a short lead gets you much closer.

Water and hazards

There is no reliable water on the trails, so bring your own for both ends of the lead. Sections of track near the saltmarsh and Tingalpa Creek turn muddy after heavy rain, and mosquitoes can be thick in the wetter pockets, particularly around dusk. Stay on the marked gravel to protect the sensitive saltmarsh and creek habitat, and keep the lead short in the grassy edges where snakes are possible in the warmer months.

When to go

Early morning is the best window: cooler for the dog, livelier for the birds, and the light through the paperbarks is worth the alarm. After rain, give the low sections a day or two to dry out.
