Manly Off-leash Dog Beach

Manly Off-leash Dog Beach sits at the end of Davenport Drive in Manly, on Brisbane's bayside (not its Sydney namesake). Tucked between the rock walls near the boat harbour, its draw is shallow, sheltered Moreton Bay water that suits dogs who like to paddle rather than battle surf. Because the beach is tidal, timing matters more here than at most.

Leash status

Brisbane City Council allows off-lead play within the designated beach area at all times, provided dogs stay under effective voice or sight control. Leads go back on for the surrounding paths and reserves, and dogs need to stay at least 10 metres clear of barbecues and playgrounds. Adjacent protected wildlife areas and anywhere signed on-lead are out of bounds. Bags are on you, as is the clean-up; bins are usually near the entrance but not guaranteed.

Water and terrain

The bay water is shallow and calm, ideal for nervous swimmers and small dogs. The surface is a mix of sand, shell and red soil that turns muddy as the tide drops, so expect dirty paws. At high tide the sand is almost entirely covered and there is little room to move; mid-to-low tide gives the best balance of water edge and running space.

Max: pack a towel and a bottle of water for a rinse before the car. The red soil here stains, and a muddy retriever on the back seat is a problem you only make once.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Davenport Drive and park at the end of the road; the street parking there serves the beach, and a path runs to the sand edge. Manly train station is a 20 to 25 minute walk, which is why most visitors drive. Shade on the sand itself is minimal, and there is no dog water, so carry fresh water and a bowl.

When to go

Early mornings or after about 4pm avoid both the heat and the weekend crowds, and checking the tide chart before you leave is the single best move. The beach stays quiet midweek at most hours.

Andonis Cafe & Bar, Manly is the post-swim coffee stop of choice. If the tide is wrong, the Stannard Road Park Fenced Dog Park at Manly West is a fully enclosed fallback, and the Lota Dog Park is a couple of suburbs north.
