Manly Off-leash Dog Beach

A small, calm-water off-leash beach at the end of Davenport Drive in Manly, on Brisbane's bayside (not the Manly in Sydney). It sits between the rock walls near the boat harbour, and the draw is the shallow, sheltered Moreton Bay water that suits dogs who like to paddle rather than battle surf. It is tidal, so timing your visit matters more here than at most beaches.

The rules. Dogs are allowed off-leash within the designated beach area at all times, provided they stay under effective control by voice or sight. Keep them on-leash on the surrounding paths and reserves, and at least 10 metres clear of barbecues and playgrounds. Adjacent protected wildlife areas and any spot signed on-leash are off-limits. Bring your own bags and clean up immediately.

The water and surface. The bay water is shallow and calm, good for nervous swimmers and small dogs. The beach is a mix of sand, shell and red soil that turns muddy as the tide drops, so paws and bellies will get dirty.

When the tide suits. Aim for mid-to-low tide. At high tide the sand is almost entirely covered and there is little room to move; as it recedes the flats get muddy. Early mornings or after about 4pm avoid both the heat and the weekend crowds.

What's there. Bins are usually near the entrance and there is limited seating at the top of the bank, but shade on the sand itself is minimal. There is no dog-specific water, so carry fresh water and a bowl. A path takes you to the beach edge.

Getting there. Drive in via Davenport Drive; street parking sits at the end of the road. It is roughly a 20 to 25 minute walk from Manly train station, so most people drive.

Nearby with the dogs. The Manly harbour foreshore path runs right alongside for a longer walk, and the village has several dog-friendly cafes for a coffee afterwards. Good for paddlers and social dogs; less ideal if your dog needs deep water or firm dry sand at all states of the tide.
