Parramatta River: Parramatta Station to Meadowbank Station

This is an 11.4 km point-to-point along the Parramatta River, running from Parramatta Station down to Meadowbank on the paved path and mangrove boardwalks of the Parramatta Valley cycleway. Dogs walk it on lead, and the return logistics matter more than the terrain, because Sydney trains do not carry pets at all and the ferry takes them only at crew discretion in a container.

Leash status

The route crosses three land managers, City of Parramatta, Greater Sydney Parklands and City of Ryde, and all three require dogs on lead. Keep 10 metres clear of playgrounds, including the one at George Kendall Riverside Park, and read the signs where the path leaves the concrete, because signposted sensitive bushland zones along the river are closed to dogs entirely.

The walk

AllTrails grades it moderate and allows two and a half to three hours. It is flat and paved for most of its length, with timber boardwalk through the mangrove sections and river views throughout. The workable versions are an out-and-back from either end or a car shuffle with a second driver. The shorter western half is covered by the Parramatta Park to Rydalmere Ferry Wharf walk, and the People's Loop Trail loops rather than commits if a point-to-point feels like too much planning.

Water and hazards

This is a working commuter cycleway, so cyclist volume peaks on weekday mornings and late afternoons, and the boardwalks run narrow enough that a dog on a long lead becomes a problem for everyone. The river is tidal, so the mangrove flats sit exposed at low tide and smell like it. Carry water, since bubblers are patchy along the industrial stretches.

Max: eleven kilometres of hot paving is hard on paws in summer. Start early, take the eastern half, and finish on the grass at Meadowbank.

Getting there and parking

Start at Parramatta Station or park near the river end of Church Street and walk in. At the Meadowbank end, street parking near the station and the Meadowbank Dog Beach gives you a swim reward for dogs who finished the walk on lead.

Make a day of it

Big Tree House Cafe in Rydalmere sits close to the middle of the route for a coffee break with the dog outside.
