North Fremantle Heritage Trail

Limestone cliffs, paperbarks and wide Swan River views run the length of the North Fremantle Heritage Trail, a riverside walk that takes in the Yoorn Heritage Trail and its Noongar art markers. Dogs are welcome, on lead for most of it, with a couple of places where they can run.

Leads and the off-lead area

The City of Fremantle looks after the trail together with the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation. Keep your dog on lead along the path.

Designated off-lead exercise zones sit on the riverfront, including the stretch opposite the Rule Street carpark and Rocky Bay Beach. Clip back on when you rejoin the trail.

The walk

The surface changes constantly, from asphalt and timber decking to grass, sand and rough limestone. Along the way you pass old industrial landmarks and small, calm river beaches below the Rocky Bay cliffs.

Shade is patchy near the river and cliff edge, and dog bubblers are few, so carry a bottle and a travel bowl. Bins sit near the access points and foreshore parking.

Free, untimed street parking is usually easy near the end of Burns Street and around the Northbank precinct.

Max: The limestone sections are rough and sandy in places. Keep the lead short along the cliff tops.

Make a day of it

Finish with a coffee at The Orange Box, or head to Leighton Beach Dog Exercise Area if your dog still wants an off-lead run on the sand.

Go early on summer mornings, before the sun reaches the open river stretches. It suits dogs that are happy on a mix of sand, stone and boardwalk.
