Mount Leura Walk

On Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf, the volcanic cones above Camperdown, the tracks give 360-degree views over the western plains to the Grampians and Mount Porndon. Dogs are welcome, and they must stay on a lead.

Lead rules

The reserves are run by a community committee with Corangamite Shire Council. Council local laws officers patrol them, and dogs must be on lead at all times to protect wildlife and the farm stock nearby.

The walk

The tracks are formed dirt and gravel, with some management tracks, and loops of different gradients. The Panorama Trail is the gentler option, while the climb up Mount Sugarloaf is steeper.

Volunteers have replanted parts of the reserve, giving some patchy shade, but the ridges and lookouts are open. You can drive up to the upper lookout area and park there, which saves the climb from the base.

Max: There is no water on the tracks and hardly any bins. Carry water, a bowl and bags, and take everything home.

In town, Camperdown Botanic Gardens looks out over the crater lakes, and the Lake Bullen Merri Foreshore Walk adds a stroll by the water.
