Lake Bullen Merri Foreshore Walk

A deep volcanic crater lake on the southern edge of Camperdown, Lake Bullen Merri is ringed by dark sand beaches and steep crater walls. Dogs are welcome on lead, which makes the foreshore a scenic leg-stretch on a western Victoria road trip.

Lead rules

Corangamite Shire Council manages the reserve land around the lake and allows dogs on a lead in the developed public areas, including South Beach. Keep the lead on for the whole walk.

The walk

Expect natural ground rather than a sealed footpath, with earth, volcanic sand and gravel tracks along the water. The shoreline is open and breezy, with little tree cover right at the edge of the lake.

Parking sits right by the South Beach entry, which is the simplest place to start.

Water and shade

No dedicated dog water stations are documented along the foreshore, so carry water and a bowl. Bring your own bags too, since bins are limited to the main recreation areas.

Max: Council has warned lake users about algae risks at Bullen Merri. Check for a current warning before letting a dog drink or wade.

When to go

With so little shade on the shoreline, summer walks are best early or on a cool day. The foreshore suits dogs that enjoy a slow sniff along the sand more than a long hike.
