Wild dog cove, Peterborough. Victoria

Wild Dog Cove sits inside the Bay of Islands Coastal Park, about two kilometres west of Peterborough on the Great Ocean Road: a quieter, cliff-backed alternative to the crowds at Bay of Martyrs. Dogs are welcome here on a lead, and the rules on this stretch of coast are tightly enforced, so it is a beach for walkers rather than for unclipping.

Leash status

Dogs must be on a lead at all times at Wild Dog Cove. The cove sits within a protected coastal park and shorebirds nest in the dunes, so Parks Victoria keeps the rules strict. Just along the coast, the main Peterborough beach between the bridge and the monument south of Irvine Park bans dogs entirely from 9am to 6pm between 1 December and Easter Monday. Dogs are prohibited year round in Port Campbell National Park, east of the Curdies River, and in the Sandy Cove Nature Reserve. Fines of $100 per dog apply for breaches, so check which zone you are actually in before letting the lead out.

Water and terrain

Expect limestone cliffs, sandy pockets and rocky sections with pools to poke around. Low tide opens up the most sand for a dog to explore; at high tide the usable beach shrinks fast, so plan the visit around the tide chart rather than the clock. The cove is unpatrolled, and coastal currents plus the rocky ground mean it is not the spot for a confident swim regardless of the leash rules.

Max: read the signage carefully here. The seasonal ban zone on the main Peterborough beach is a short walk from Wild Dog Cove and it is easy to drift between the two without noticing you have crossed a boundary.

Getting there and parking

A small gravel car park off the Great Ocean Road leads onto a short walking track down to the cove, about 10 minutes west of Port Campbell or 25 minutes east of Warrnambool. There is no public toilet or drinking water at the beach itself, and while waste bags are sometimes available near the entrance, bring your own as backup. V/Line buses run the Great Ocean Road corridor but stops are sparse, so a car is the practical way to reach a specific cove like this.

When to go

Go early morning or late afternoon for the quietest visit and the best light on the cliffs, and aim for low tide for the most usable sand. This is a lead-on, watch-your-footing beach rather than a running one, better suited to calmer dogs than big runners.
