Wild Dog Cove sits inside the Bay of Islands Coastal Park, about two kilometres west of Peterborough on the Great Ocean Road, a quieter, cliff-backed alternative to the crowds at Bay of Martyrs. Dogs are welcome here on a lead, and the rules on this stretch of coast are tightly enforced.

The rules. Dogs must be on a lead at all times at Wild Dog Cove, it sits within a protected coastal park and shorebirds nest in the dunes. Just along the coast, the main Peterborough beach (between the bridge and the monument south of Irvine Park) bans dogs entirely from 9am to 6pm between 1 December and Easter Monday. Dogs are prohibited year round in Port Campbell National Park (east of the Curdies River) and in the Sandy Cove Nature Reserve. Fines of $100 per dog apply for breaches, so check which zone you are actually in before letting the lead out.

The water and terrain. Expect limestone cliffs, sandy pockets and rocky rock pools. Low tide opens up the most sand for a dog to explore; at high tide the usable beach shrinks fast, so time a visit around the tide chart rather than the clock. The cove is unpatrolled, and coastal currents plus rocky sections mean it is not the spot for a confident swim regardless of the leash rules.

Getting there. A small gravel car park off the Great Ocean Road leads onto a short walking track down to the cove, about 10 minutes west of Port Campbell or 25 minutes east of Warrnambool. There is no public toilet or drinking water at the beach itself, and while waste bags are sometimes available near the entrance, bring your own as backup. V/Line buses run the Great Ocean Road corridor but stops are sparse, a car is the practical way to reach a specific cove like this.

Daysy Hill Country Cottages and other pet-friendly stays around Port Campbell, ten minutes away, make a reasonable base, and several Port Campbell cafes offer outdoor seating where a well-behaved dog is usually tolerated.

Go early morning or late afternoon for the quietest visit and the best light on the cliffs, and plan around low tide for the most usable sand. This is a lead-on, watch-your-footing beach rather than a running-off-leash one, better suited to calmer dogs than to big runners.
