Mount Crawford Forest - Chalks Track

Chalks Track runs through the pine plantations of Mount Crawford Forest near Williamstown, around Chalk's Campground off Warren Road. ForestrySA allows dogs in the plantation areas, which makes this a proper bush hike you can share with a dog.

Lead rules

Dogs must be on a lead in the campgrounds and designated on-lead zones, and under effective control elsewhere in the plantation. Keeping the lead on throughout is the simplest way to stay within the rules.

Dogs are not allowed in the native forest reserves or the water catchment buffer zones, so watch for the signs.

The walk

Tracks follow dirt service roads and fire trails over undulating ground, through tall pines, open native bush and big river red gums. The canopy gives plenty of shade.

The forest is a venue for dryland mushing and sled dog training, so do not be surprised to meet a working team.

Before you go

There is parking near the campground and trailhead areas. Bins are scarce and there is no reliable drinking water, so carry water and take every bag home.

Max: Plantation and native reserve boundaries can sit close together. Read the signs at each junction and turn back where dogs are not allowed.

When to go

Cooler months suit these wide, shaded tracks. They are quiet, too, which helps dogs who get anxious in crowds.
