Fromm's Farm

Fromm's Farm is a rustic group campsite run by ForestrySA in the Mount Crawford plantation forest, in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges about an hour north-east of Adelaide. It is built around an old three-sided shelter shed set among tall pines, booked as exclusive group hire for up to around 20 people, and dogs are welcome to camp along with the group.

Dogs are permitted at the site and through the surrounding plantation forest, but they must be kept under control at all times. ForestrySA's forest-wide rule is dogs on a lead of no more than three metres in plantation and shared-use areas, and dogs are banned outright from designated Native Forest Reserves within the estate, even on a lead. There is no separate pet fee, just the standard group camping charge, and since the site is outdoor camping only, your dog stays in your own tent, van or camper.

Fox baiting warning

ForestrySA runs regular fox baiting programs across the Mount Crawford reserve, and 1080 baits are lethal to dogs. Keep your dog close, do not let them scavenge or wander off-trail, and check current baiting alerts with ForestrySA before you travel.

The camp setup

Facilities are deliberately basic: the open shelter shed, an external toilet, a fire pit and non-potable rainwater. Bring all your own drinking water plus food and treats for the dog, because nothing is provided on site. The forest and campfires are off limits on days of Total Fire Ban, so check the CFS rating before you head up. This is a functional bush camp for groups rather than a polished stay, best suited to dogs that are comfortable around campfires, other dogs and a bit of noise.

Getting there

The site is on Mount Road within Mount Crawford Forest, reached off the road between Williamstown and Birdwood. Forestry access roads are rough in patches but generally manageable in a 2WD, and there is parking for cars, campers and caravans beside the shelter.

Close by with the dogs

The Kidman Trail passes through the forest and gives direct on-lead walking from the site where it runs through plantation compartments, and the wider forest has fire-track loops such as the Starkey Road walk for longer leg-stretches. If your dog needs a safe off-lead run on the way through, Williamstown Fenced Dog Park is in the nearby Barossa town.
