Sorell Causeway Path

Listed as the Midway Point Causeway, this is the shared path over the Sorell Causeway between Midway Point and Sorell, part of the Orielton Lagoon Loop. It crosses open water with Pitt Water on one side and Orielton Lagoon on the other, and dogs walk it on a lead.

Lead rules

Sorell Council requires dogs on a lead on shared pathways and in public areas unless a spot is signed off-lead. The causeway carries the Tasman Highway, so a short lead also keeps your dog clear of bikes and traffic.

The walk

The surface mixes concrete with sealed and unsealed shared path. The reward is the view, with wide water, protected wetland and plenty of waterbirds.

Water and shade

There is almost no shade on the crossing, and water and bins are sparse on the path itself. Carry water and a bowl, and on warm days check the pavement heat with your hand first.

Park at the pull-offs near the ends of the causeway approaches or on local streets in Midway Point.

Max: Waterbirds on both sides and a highway alongside. This is a short-lead walk, so no lunging at the ducks.

Pick a mild day. Exposed crossings like this are hard work for dogs in summer heat, and birdwatchers will get the most out of it.
