Penna Dog exercise area

Penna Dog Exercise Area is a 1.4-kilometre, year-round off-leash beach on Penna's tidal shoreline, about 30 to 35 minutes from Hobart. The sandy, shallow-water access and quiet setting make it one of southern Tasmania's better spots for dogs that want room to run and swim without seasonal restrictions.

The rules. Dogs can be off-lead on the sand and within the council's designated purple-shaded map area year-round. Brown-shaded zones surrounding the beach require leads, so check the Sorell Council map before you let your dog go. Elsewhere in the municipality, some specified beach zones prohibit dogs between 10am and 6pm from 1 December to 1 March, so do not assume that window applies here without checking the current council map for this exercise area. Owners must maintain effective control at all times.

Terrain and water. Penna is a tidal beach with shallow water over mudflats, ideal for wading and swimming dogs. Low to mid tide reveals the most sand and gives your dog proper running room. At high tide, water can reach the bank and space tightens considerably, so check tide times before you commit to the drive.

What's there. Amenities are minimal. Dog waste bins sit at Sorell Council designated spots, and natural shade is very limited, so bring water and sun protection for both of you on warm days. Expect an exposed, natural shoreline rather than a maintained park.

Getting there. Drive from Hobart via the A3 towards Sorell, then turn onto Shark Point Road. The address is 342 Shark Point Road, Penna. There is no public transport to the area. Parking is limited to informal roadside spots along Shark Point Road, so arrive early on sunny weekends when more locals tend to show.

Nearby. Penna itself has no cafes, but Sorell is a 10 to 15-minute drive and offers a couple of good stops for the way home. Try Liv Eat Sorell or Velvet for outdoor seating. If you are staying longer, Richmond Caravan & Cabin Park is a pet-friendly option in the broader area.

When to go. Early morning or late afternoon is best, timed around a low to mid tide for maximum sand. Weekdays are generally quiet. Good for dogs that love open water access and long, uninterrupted beach runs.
