McCrae Foreshore Walk

The McCrae Foreshore Walk follows the Port Phillip Bay shore as part of the Mornington Peninsula Bay Trail, passing the historic McCrae Lighthouse and a row of bathing boxes. On the path itself the rule is simple, dogs stay on a lead.

Leads and the beach

Mornington Peninsula Shire requires dogs on lead along the foreshore path and reserve at all times. The beach beside it has its own seasonal and time-of-day rules, especially near the Margaret Street car park in summer, so read the signs before stepping onto the sand.

The walk

The trail mixes paved, asphalt and gravel sections, and it is flat and easy underfoot. Coastal tea tree and banksias line much of it, giving welcome shade.

Drinking fountains with dog bowls sit along the foreshore and near the toilet blocks, and bins are spaced along the way. Park near the lighthouse or at the Margaret Street car park.

Make a day of it

For a run off lead, head to Benbenjie Reserve Dog Off Leash Area in McCrae or the Rosebud Beach Dog Off Leash Area along the bay.

When to go

Summer brings the tightest beach rules and the biggest crowds, so the off-season and early mornings are easiest. The flat, shaded path suits older dogs.
