Rosebud Beach Dog Off Leash Area runs along the Port Phillip Bay foreshore in McCrae, from roughly 100 metres west to 200 metres east of the car park opposite Murray Anderson Drive. It is calm, shallow, sandy water on the doorstep of the Rosebud/McCrae border, backed by the Bay Trail, and the defining fact is the seasonal clock: unrestricted off-leash outside summer daytime hours, on-leash within the reserve behind the sand.

The rules. From 1 December to 28 February, dogs are banned from the beach between 10am and 6pm, but off-leash from 6pm to 10am. From 1 March to 30 November, dogs are permitted off-leash at all times. Effective voice or leash control is required throughout, and you need a leash on hand for the walk to and from the sand. The off-leash allowance covers the beach only. Once you're up in the foreshore bushland or on the Bay Trail itself, dogs must be on-leash. Keep dogs out of the vegetated dunes, which shelter local shorebirds including the hooded plover, and carry waste bags. Fines apply for not cleaning up.

What's there. Paid parking is available at the Murray Anderson Drive foreshore car park, with waste bins and bags at the main beach access points. Some access paths have seasonal water bowls, though it's worth bringing your own as backup. The Bay Trail runs the length of the beach, linking straight through to McCrae and Rosebud.

Getting there. It's about a 75 minute, 75 kilometre drive south of Melbourne CBD via the M1 and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. By public transport, take the Frankston line to Frankston Station, then the 788 bus (Portsea via Frankston) and get off near Murray Anderson Drive, a short walk from the foreshore.

Nearby with the dogs. Alatonero Cafe, opposite McCrae Beach on Point Nepean Road, has outdoor seating that welcomes dogs. Rosebud Motel offers budget accommodation with select pet-friendly rooms, though it's worth confirming pet policy and fees when booking. Summer (December-February) and long weekends bring heavy swimmer and family crowds, so early mornings or evenings are the better window, and conveniently that's also when the off-leash hours apply. Outside summer, it's relaxed and open all day. Good for dogs that love calm, shallow water and a wide stretch of sand at low tide.
