Lake Walyungup Loop

A stark white salt lake, low dunes and wide skies set Lake Walyungup apart from the suburban walks around Safety Bay. Dogs are welcome, on a lead.

Lead rules

The lake is part of Rockingham Lakes Regional Park, cared for by the City of Rockingham and the state's parks department. Dogs must stay leashed throughout the reserve and wetlands.

The walk

Loops run from roughly 2.1 to 5.8 kilometres. The surface keeps changing, from limestone paths and bitumen to vehicle tracks and soft, deep sand that makes hard work of the longer versions.

You may share the lakebed views with land-sailors and model aircraft flyers. The place holds deep significance for Noongar people, and its name means a place where Noongars talk.

Water and shade

There is no drinking water on the loop and little shade once the path opens onto the lakebed. Carry water for both of you, plus bags, as bins are sparse beyond the parking areas.

Max: Soft sand and white glare heat up fast. Skip the midday walk in summer and check paws after the sandy stretches.

Getting started

Park near the trailheads off Safety Bay Road or on the Warnbro side. Afterwards, Pengo's Cafe in Shoalwater is the coffee stop, or add the coastal Foreshore Flow Trail.

Early morning or evening is best. The full loop suits fit dogs, and the short one is plenty for older legs.
