Bungaree Oval

Bungaree Oval is a large, flat grassed oval on Centaurus Street in central Rockingham that doubles as a designated off-leash dog exercise area under City of Rockingham rules. It is an unfenced community oval with room to run, mature trees for shade and a path around the edge.

The dog setup

Dogs may be off lead on the oval outside scheduled sport and organised events, kept under effective control and in sight the whole time. The oval is shared ground: it hosts little athletics, the Rockingham Dog Club and other community bookings, so check on-site signage before unclipping, because the oval can be off limits to dogs during games and training.

Because there is no fence, this is a ground for dogs with reliable recall rather than escape artists. Carry bags, use the bins provided, and keep clear of playgrounds and picnic areas. Rangers do patrol Rockingham reserves, so the rules are enforced rather than decorative.

Worth knowing

There are water fountains, shaded seating and perimeter walking and cycling paths, so a slow lap works as well as a fetch session. The oval's size makes it useful for distance work: long retrieves, sprint intervals and a proper blowout for high-energy breeds that a suburban pocket park cannot absorb. Mid-morning on a weekday is the quiet window; early mornings and late afternoons fill with walkers and their dogs.

The surface is standard sports-ground turf, mown short and easy on paws, though it browns off through Perth's summer. There is no dedicated small-dog separation on an oval like this, so judge the mix of dogs on the ground before joining in.

The oval sits in residential central Rockingham, a few minutes from the foreshore by car, with street parking nearby plus a dedicated overflow area. Bus routes serve the surrounding streets and cycling paths connect in.
