Killick Creek

Killick Creek meets the sea at Crescent Head, and its calm tidal shallows beside open sand suit dogs that like both a paddle and a surf splash. Which side of the creek bridge you start on decides everything.

Leads and the off-lead area

Kempsey Shire Council bans dogs on the left-hand side of the Killick Creek bridge. On the right-hand side dogs are allowed, on a lead, until you reach the designated off-leash area on Killick Beach.

Some stretches carry seasonal or hourly limits, so check the signs at the beach entry before letting go.

Max: The bridge is the line. The left side is no dogs at all, so start on the right and keep the lead on until the off-leash signs.

The ground

Expect sandy tracks, foreshore grass and open beach rather than a formed path. Shorebirds work the estuary edge, so give them room.

Shade and parking

Shade is scarce on the open sand. The trees and grassy reserve near the creek and car park are where to find it.

Public parking and council bins are around the beachfront and creek precinct. Bring water for the dog.

Cooler parts of the day suit the open sand best, and dogs that prefer calm water will love the creek shallows.
