Little Mermaid lookout trailhead

A steep, demanding trail in Kholo that rewards the climb with sweeping panoramic views from a prominent lookout rock. The Little Mermaid lookout trailhead, accessed via Light Line Rd, is a favourite for trail runners and walkers willing to earn their scenery.

The walk. Expect a 1.5 to 2 hour hike rated moderate to difficult. The route tackles steep, narrow and potentially eroded sections, demanding sure footing and a solid baseline of fitness from both handler and dog.

Leash status. On-leash and under effective control at all times. The steep, narrow and eroded track makes safe footing critical, and leashing is essential to keep dogs from chasing wildlife in this nature area.

Hazards. The trail turns slippery and muddy after rain, so hold off until it has dried out. Steep and eroded sections need careful footing for both of you, and since this is a nature area, keep your dog from chasing any wildlife you come across.

Water and amenities. This is a wilderness trail with no toilets, water fountains or bins. Bring plenty of water for yourself and your dog, and carry out all waste. There is no creek access for filling bowls.

Getting there. A car is required as the remote location has no public transport. Turn off Lake Manchester Rd onto Light Line Rd, then continue about 500 metres to the locked Council gate, where you will need to open the gate to reach the trailhead and can park in the small gravel lot.

Nearby with the dogs. If your dog still has energy to burn off-leash after the drive home, the Mt Crosby dog off-leash park in the neighbouring suburb of Chuwar is a practical stop.

When to go. Weekdays and early Saturday mornings are the quietest. Sunday mornings and evenings draw the biggest crowds, so time your visit outside those windows if you prefer the trail to yourself. Best suited to fit, steady-footed dogs and owners comfortable with a proper climb.
