Little Mermaid lookout trailhead

The Little Mermaid lookout trailhead off Light Line Road in Kholo leads up a steep, demanding track to a prominent lookout rock with sweeping views over the Brisbane River valley. It is a favourite of trail runners and fit walkers, and it works for dogs on one condition: they climb it on a lead.

The walk

Expect a 1.5 to 2 hour hike rated moderate to difficult. The route tackles steep, narrow and potentially eroded sections, so it demands sure footing and a solid baseline of fitness from both handler and dog. This is not a casual riverside stroll, and there is no easy bail-out once you are partway up.

Leash status

Dogs are on-lead and under effective control at all times. The steep, narrow and eroded track makes safe footing critical, and the lead keeps dogs from chasing wildlife through the surrounding nature area. Bring a short lead rather than a long line, because there is no room to tangle on the narrow sections.

Max: steep, eroded descents are where an over-excited dog can pull you off balance. Keep the lead short on the tricky sections and set the pace yourself.

Water

This is a wilderness trail with no toilets, water fountains or bins, and no reliable creek access for filling bowls. Carry plenty of water for both of you and pack out all waste, including your dog's.

Hazards

The track turns slippery and muddy after rain, so hold off until it has dried out. Erosion makes sections of the climb unstable underfoot, and the drop-offs beside narrow stretches deserve respect. Keep your dog from chasing any wildlife you come across, both for the animal's sake and because a lunging dog on an exposed track is a real fall risk.

Getting there and parking

A car is required, as the location has no public transport. Turn off Lake Manchester Road onto Light Line Road, continue about 500 metres to the locked Council gate, open it to reach the trailhead, and park in the small gravel lot. Close the gate behind you.

When to go

Early morning is the pick: cooler for the climb, and the lookout gets its best light across the valley. After heavy rain, give the track several days to dry. If your dog still has energy to burn off-lead afterwards, the Mt Crosby dog off leash park in neighbouring Chuwar is on the way home.
