The Off Leash Dog Park at North Ipswich is a fully fenced enclosure at 27 Fitzgibbon Street, on the Bremer River bank beside the Cribb Park precinct. It is a compact, workmanlike space: secure fencing all round, open grass underfoot, and a water station for dogs working up a thirst. This is a park for a controlled play session or a quick burst of exercise between errands, not an all-day expedition, and the river setting gives it more atmosphere than most suburban enclosures.

The dog setup

The perimeter fencing is the main draw. Dogs can be let off the lead the moment they are inside, with no road or river reach while they run. Standard Ipswich City Council conditions apply, as for any off-leash area: your dog must stay under effective control and continuous supervision, you need to carry a lead with you at all times, and waste goes straight into the bins provided. Dogs that show aggressive behaviour towards people or other animals have to be removed, and dangerous, menacing or restricted breed dogs are not permitted in public off-leash areas at all.

Shade is limited to trees along the edges, so mornings and late afternoons are the comfortable windows, especially through summer. Open grass in the middle gives owners somewhere to stand or sit while the dogs do the work.

Max: walk the fence line before you unclip. The riverbank is right there and after rain the ground can be soft and slippery.

Worth knowing

Being on the Bremer River has a downside: the ground here can turn to mud after heavy rain, and Ipswich gets its share. If the river has been up, give it a day or two to dry out. The enclosure is on the smaller side, which suits smaller dogs or a focused session better than a big-dog sprint space. Bring your own bags if you can, as supplies at council parks are not always replenished.

Getting there and parking

The park sits a few minutes from the Riverlink Shopping Centre precinct, so street parking around Fitzgibbon Street and the Cribb Park area is generally easy. It is walkable from the Ipswich CBD across the river, which makes it a handy stop if you are combining a dog run with a coffee run in town. The Cribb Park boat ramp and riverside paths nearby are on-lead territory, useful for padding the outing before or after off-leash time.
