Maribyrnong River Trail, Kensington Banks

The riverside path through Kensington Banks is officially part of the Maribyrnong River Trail, the shared path along the water's edge in Kensington. It is an on-lead walk with river views, wetlands and saltmarsh.

Lead rules

Dogs must stay on a lead along the shared path and river reserve, unless they are in a signed off-lead zone. The City of Melbourne manages the reserve and expects handlers to carry and use waste bags.

The walk

The path is wide, paved and shared with joggers and cyclists. You walk beside the Maribyrnong River with native saltmarsh, wetlands and plenty of birdlife, and a few benches look out over the water.

Bins sit near the access points. Dog water on the path itself is limited, so bring a bottle.

Make a day of it

For off-lead time, the JJ Holland Park Dog Off Leash Area is in Kensington, and Clayton Reserve in North Melbourne is another park close by.

Who it suits

Away from the traffic and shopping strips, it is a quiet, breezy walk that locals use for the morning and evening routine. The flat paved surface suits older dogs and easy on-lead walkers.
