Kangaroo Point and Story Bridge Loop

This 6.4 km loop circles Kangaroo Point on flat, paved paths, dropping from the cliffs down to the river, past Captain Burke Park under the Story Bridge, then up and across the bridge itself before returning via Howard Smith Wharves or the ferry. It is rated easy and takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, with river views, city skyline outlooks and a couple of formal observation decks along the way. One staircase along the cliffs has 107 steps, worth noting if you are walking with an older dog.

The rules. Brisbane City Council requires dogs on lead on all footpaths, the Story Bridge, and in public parks including the clifftop boardwalk and river boardwalk. Effective control is the standard, and off-leash breaches can attract fines up to $483. No further access limits are set for this route.

Water. Water fountains with integrated dog bowls are available at Captain Burke Park and at points along the river boardwalk, so a bowl or bottle as backup is optional rather than essential on a mild day.

Hazards. The boardwalk section is often sunny and exposed, with shade concentrated in Captain Burke Park and C.T. White Park. The Story Bridge crossing puts dogs close to cyclists sharing the same path, so keep to the walking side and a short lead over the bridge itself.

Getting there. River Terrace has metered parking with 15 minutes free, and there is a car park at Captain Burke Park. The CityHopper ferry to Holman Street Ferry Terminal drops you directly onto the lower boardwalk, a handy option if you would rather skip one leg of the walking loop.

Nearby with the dogs. For a longer river circuit, the Four Bridges Walk extends the theme, and the Kangaroo Point Bikeway suits dogs who prefer a shared path over stairs. For a proper off-lead run afterwards, James Warner Park Fenced Dog Park is close by. If you started this loop wanting a garden stroll instead, the CBD's City Botanic Gardens allows leashed dogs too, though it is not the same site as the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens.

When to go. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the worst of the sun on the exposed boardwalk sections. Good for seniors on the shaded park stretches, less so on the 107 steps.
