Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park

Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park crowns Garden Hill on the Eltham-Yarra Glen Road, and the reason to come is the view: 360 degrees across the Yarra Valley to the Melbourne skyline. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

Nillumbik Shire Council manages the park, and it is on-lead only. There is no off-leash area here.

The walk

Sealed and firm gravel paths circle the stone lookout tower and memorial, with wheelchair-accessible sections around the top. Once you are on the internal paths, the road noise fades into bush.

Kangaroos often graze around the reserve early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Max: Kangaroos are about at dawn and dusk. Keep a firm hold of the lead at those times.

What's there

There is on-site parking near the entrance, public toilets, and bins around the picnic and parking areas. Mature trees shade the lawns and picnic spots, but bring water for the dog.

Make a day of it

For a longer walk, the Panton Hill Figure 8 Loop is nearby, and Wild Wombat Cafe in Hurstbridge makes a good stop.

When to go

Pick a clear day for the view. The short, even paths suit older dogs.
