Kanahooka Point

Kanahooka Point pokes out into Lake Illawarra, and the foreshore paths around it give wide water views, birdlife and shady picnic spots. Dogs are welcome on lead.

Leads by the lake

Wollongong City Council requires dogs on a leash in the foreshore parks and paths here, except in signed off-leash areas. Dogs must stay more than 10 metres from children's play areas and out of wildlife protection zones.

The walk

A paved shared path runs along the foreshore past picnic spots, jetties and boat ramps, flat enough for walking, running or cycling. For a longer outing, start from Yallah Bay Jetty and walk to the point.

Public taps sit at intervals along the foreshore, with bins near the parking bays and picnic areas. Trees and BBQ shelters around Lakeside Reserve give shade, but the point itself is exposed.

Car parks near Lakeside Reserve make it easy to get onto the path.

Max: Bikes use this path too. Keep to the left and shorten the lead when one comes through.

Passionate Palate in Kanahooka is a nearby coffee stop, and Reed Park Fenced Dog Park in Horsley is there for an off-lead run.

When to go

Sunrise and sunset are local favourites for the light on the lake. The flat, paved surface suits dogs of any age.
