Windang Dog Beach

Windang Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of sand on Wollongong's southern coast, backed by a shaded bush track and known for firm, flat sand at low tide that suits fetch and long runs. The catch is that not all of Windang Beach is open to dogs, so it pays to know the boundaries before you arrive.

The dog setup

Dogs are allowed off-leash in the designated zone in the middle to northern section of the beach, under effective control by someone 16 or older. A red zone where dogs are banned at all times runs along the front of Windang Beach Tourist Park and around the Lake Illawarra entrance, and the boundaries are marked by signage that can shift.

Check Wollongong City Council's dog beaches and parks page before you go, carry bags and clean up. There are no wash stations or dog taps on this stretch, so bring your own water and a portable bowl.

Worth knowing

The walk from the car park to the sand runs through a shaded, forest-like corridor, which is a genuinely pleasant part of the visit on a hot day. Low tide uncovers a wide band of firm wet sand; at high tide the beach narrows and the red zone boundary near the tourist park is harder to judge.

Max: time your visit to the low tide if you can. The firm wet sand is better for running, and the boundary near the tourist park is far easier to read against it.

Getting there and parking

The access sits off Windang Road, south of Wollongong, with free and metered parking near the foreshore. The car parks fill on weekends, and Transport for NSW buses along Windang Road stop within a short walk of the access paths.

Close by with the dogs

The Rosy Lea Cafe over the bridge in Primbee is the obvious coffee stop after a beach walk, and Lakeside Inn on Windang Road takes dogs in designated rooms for a fee if you are staying overnight.
