Windang Dog Beach

Windang Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of sand in Windang, on Wollongong's southern coast, backed by a shaded bush track and known for firm, flat sand at low tide that is ideal for fetch and long runs.

The rules. Dogs are allowed off-leash in the designated zone in the middle to northern section of the beach, but must stay under effective control by someone 16 or older. A red zone (no dogs at any time) runs along the section directly in front of Windang Beach Tourist Park and around the Lake Illawarra entrance, so do not assume the whole beach is open. Getting there. The beach sits off Windang Road, south of Wollongong. Free and metered parking is available near the foreshore and beach access points, though it fills on weekends. Transport for NSW buses running along Windang Road stop within a short walk of the access paths.

Nearby with the dogs. The Rosy Lea Cafe in nearby Primbee is a solid coffee stop after a beach walk. For an overnight stay, the Lakeside Inn on Windang Road takes dogs in designated rooms for a fee, confirm at booking.

Go early on weekdays or off-peak mid-week for the quietest walk. Weekends, especially Saturday mornings, get busy, and low tide is when the beach is at its best for dogs that like to run.
