Soldiers Memorial Walk

The Soldiers Memorial Walk is a gentle route that starts at the oval and memorial park on Lower North East Road and finishes in Horn Street. Dogs are welcome on a lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Adelaide Hills Council requires dogs on a lead of 2 metres or less on public streets and in parks not signed for off-leash use. That covers the oval, the community spaces and the streets along this walk.

The walk

The route undulates gently over footpaths, gravel and natural ground. Along the way you pass commemorative plantings and district memorials to local people who served in past conflicts.

The perimeter trees offer some shade, but the oval itself is open to the sun.

Before you go

Parking is at the memorial park and oval precinct. There are some bins near the grounds but few bag dispensers, so bring your own bags and water for the dog.

The memorial park is community owned and run by volunteers, so leave it as you found it.

Make a day of it

For a longer outing, Gate 18 Anstey Hill Recreation Park is also in Houghton, and Tea Tree Gully Coffee Shoppe is a good place to finish.

In summer, walk in the cooler part of the day, since the oval gives little cover. It suits steady walkers happy with a few gentle rises.
