Griffith University Nathan Campus Walking Paths

Griffith University's Nathan campus backs straight onto Toohey Forest Park, and its paths are one of the easiest ways into the bush south of Brisbane's centre. Dogs are welcome, but strictly on a leash the whole way.

The walk

Near the buildings and campus ponds the paths are mostly concrete. Head uphill toward tracks like the Nathan Ridge Track and the surface changes to compacted dirt and gravel under eucalypt bushland.

More than 30 connected tracks run through the forest, so you can keep it short or build a long loop.

Wallabies, koalas and plenty of birds live here, which is the reason for the lead rule.

Leads and wildlife

Brisbane City Council manages Toohey Forest, and Griffith looks after the campus grounds. Keep dogs leashed and stay on the formed tracks.

Max: Keep the lead short on the ridge tracks. A wallaby in the scrub is the fastest way to lose your arm.

Water, shade and parking

A thick eucalypt canopy shades most of the network. The campus has drinking fountains near its buildings, but the forest tracks are dry, so carry water for the dog.

Bins sit at entry points like the Griffith University gate into the forest. Campus parking is paid or by permit, with a few spaces near the Toohey picnic area.

Afterwards, try The Feathers cafe in Nathan, or let the dog run at the D.M. Henderson Park Dog Off-Leash Area.

The shade makes this a good summer walk, but go early for parking in semester.
