Geilston Bay Recreation Area

This walk follows the paths around the Geilston Bay Recreation Area off Debomfords Lane. Its appeal is open grass where dogs can go off lead, right beside a flat foreshore path looking across the Derwent toward Mount Wellington.

Lead rules

The City of Clarence allows dogs off lead in the recreation area, under effective control and at least 10 metres from children's play equipment. On the coastal and foreshore paths, including the trail toward Lindisfarne, dogs go on lead.

The walk

Paths range from bitumen and wide concrete to narrow hand-built gravel and drystone sections right on the shoreline. You pass bays of moored yachts, open lawns, and the park's skate park and BMX track.

Water and shade

Mature trees and covered timber picnic huts give shade, and bins sit around the picnic and barbecue areas. Dog water fountains are hit and miss, so pack a travel bowl.

Parking is near Debomfords Lane and the Geilston Bay Boat Club.

Max: The off-lead rule stops 10 metres short of the play equipment. Call your dog back well before the playground, not at the edge of it.

It suits mixed households, with a run on the grass for energetic dogs and an easy path by the water for older ones.
