Dundowran Beach Walk

The foreshore at Dundowran Beach, just along the coast from Nikenbah, is one of the Fraser Coast's more generous spots for dogs. Much of it is off-leash, though the rules change with the section and the time of day.

Leads and the off-lead times

Fraser Coast Regional Council sets the rules. Between Sawmill Road and Ansons Road, around the Brennan Park foreshore, dogs can be off leash from 3pm to 8am and must be on lead from 8am to 3pm.

From Ansons Road to the end of Spence Street, heading towards Point Vernon, the beach is a 24-hour off-leash exercise area.

The walk

This is a walk on sand, with firm, hard-packed flats exposed at low tide. The wide tidal flats and quiet bush edges draw plenty of birds.

For a change from sand, the Ted and Maud Mungomery Vine Forest Reserve nearby has soil and bark tracks.

Max: Check which stretch you are on before unclipping. The Brennan Park end is lead-on through the middle of the day.

When to go

Low tide gives the most room to roam. Late afternoon suits everyone, since the whole foreshore is off-leash after 3pm.
