Arkarra Lagoons is a freshwater wetlands reserve on Madsen Road in Dundowran Beach, with an easy 2.1 km loop trail through gardens and lagoon habitat that draws birdwatchers as much as dog walkers, and dogs are welcome on leash the whole way round.

The rules. Dogs must stay on lead throughout the lagoons and gardens and stick to the formed walking paths, since the reserve exists mainly to protect the birdlife using the wetlands. Bring your own bags and use the bins near the entrance.

The walk. The loop trail is roughly 2.1 km and easy-grade, mostly flat and shaded, a comfortable half-hour amble rather than a workout.

What's there. Arkarra Tea Gardens cafe sits on-site with outdoor seating, plus basic restrooms and bins near the entrance.

Getting there. The reserve is at 22-28 Madsen Road, Dundowran Beach, about 10 to 15 minutes' drive from central Hervey Bay, with on-site parking. Public transport out here is limited, so a car is the practical option.

Watch-outs. This is a bird-focused wetland, so keep dogs leashed and off any water's edge where birds are nesting or feeding. The lagoons are freshwater and not tide-affected, but if you are heading to Dundowran Beach afterwards, check the tide times separately.

Stick to the path and keep the lead on the whole loop, the birdlife here is the point of the reserve and a dog off lead in the reeds will end the visit early.

Go early morning for the best birdwatching and the quietest trail. Good for an easy, shaded walk before or after a coffee at the on-site cafe, or a beach run at nearby Dundowran Beach.
