Dobinson Reserve

Dobinson Reserve is a grassy neighbourhood block in Blacksmiths that Lake Macquarie City Council lists as leash-free at all times. It is not a long walking track, but it is a reliable place for a dog to run.

Off-lead, but unfenced

Dogs can be off lead across the reserve, day and night. The catch is that there is no fence, and the park sits beside the Pacific Highway, so only let a dog loose if its recall is solid.

Max: Highway traffic is close. Keep the lead on until you are well into the grass and away from that edge.

What you'll find

Expect open grass, a neighbourhood playground and a few mature trees rather than shaded paths. Bins are around the park and playground.

Water is hit and miss, so bring a bottle and bowl for the dog. Street parking is easy on Tirranna Street and Maneela Street.

Make a day of it

For a swim or a longer run, head to Dog's Leg Island or the Swansea Dog Exercise Area.

It suits a quick daily play for dogs with good recall. In summer, go early or late, since shade on the grass is limited.
