Mount Painter Nature Reserve

Mount Painter Nature Reserve sits between Cook and Aranda, a chunk of undulating bushland with fire trails and narrow walking paths climbing to a summit with views across the Brindabella Ranges and out over Canberra. It is a proper bush walk, not a flat suburban loop, and dogs must stay on-leash the whole way.

The rules. Dogs are required to be on-leash at all times in the reserve, both to protect wildlife and to keep the ecosystem intact. Kangaroos are common here, especially at dawn and dusk, and an off-leash dog chasing one is exactly the scenario the rule exists for. Stick to the marked management trails, carry bags and take your dog's waste out with you as there are no bins inside the reserve. ACT Parks can fine up to $1,500 for non-compliance, so this is not a token rule.

What's there. Nothing, by design. No toilets, no water points, no bins inside the reserve itself. Carry water for both yourself and the dog, particularly on the exposed summit sections where there is limited shade.

Getting there. Small dirt parking areas sit at the end of Chamberlain Street in Cook and off Bindubi Street. Parking at the Chamberlain Street access point is limited, so it can fill on weekend mornings. ACTION buses service the surrounding Cook streets if you would rather not drive.

Nearby with the dogs. Little Oink in the Cook shops is a well-regarded dog-friendly cafe for a coffee afterwards, and Two Before Ten in nearby Aranda is another popular option with outdoor seating and water bowls out. Neither is in our directory yet, so confirm current hours and pet policy before you go.

When to go. Weekday mid-mornings or early afternoons are quietest; weekends and public holidays draw more walkers, and the track turns muddy after rain. Good for confident, leash-trained dogs who can handle a steep climb; less suited to dogs that struggle with loose gravel or heat, since shade is limited near the top.
