What visitors mention
The Zig Zag Fire Trail climbs from the end of Kanimbla Valley Road in Collinsvale up towards Goat Hills, an out-and-back route of roughly 1.9 to 5km depending on how far you push, with open bushland and powerline access paths giving way to views over kunanyi/Mount Wellington, New Norfolk and south towards Hobart.
The walk. Expect a steady, steep climb rather than a flat stroll, allow 1-2 hours for the full return trip. The surface is a formed fire trail, easy to follow, though it can get slippery in wet weather, so proper walking shoes matter more than usual.
Leash status. Dogs are allowed on-lead on the Zig Zag Fire Trail, since it's a shared, multi-purpose trail used by walkers and mountain bikers alike. Keep dogs leashed the whole way and clean up after them.

Water and hazards. There's no creek or water source on this trail and no bins or toilets at the trailhead, so carry water for your dog and pack out everything you bring in. Mist can roll in and obscure the views, so check the weather before committing to the full climb.
Getting there. From Hobart, head out via Glenorchy and Berriedale onto Collinsvale Road, then follow it to the end of Kanimbla Valley Road where the sealed road stops and the trail begins. Parking is informal roadside space at the end of the road, there's no dedicated car park. Public transport doesn't reach the trailhead, so plan on driving.
When to go. Weekdays and early mornings are quietest; weekends bring more walkers and mountain bikers on the same trail. Good for dogs that are solid on-lead and comfortable with a real climb, less suited to dogs that struggle with steep, sustained grades.
