Chapel Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Chapel Street Reserve is a fully fenced, off-leash grass reserve in Glenorchy, fenced in 2019 after community consultation and now one of the better set-up dog parks around greater Hobart. It is a genuine off-leash space rather than a shared park with a leash rule, which is the main reason to make the trip.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off-lead only inside the fenced boundary. Owners need to stay in the park, keep dogs under effective control, supervise at all times and pick up after them, with bins provided on site. There is no separate small-dog area, so all sizes mix in the one field, which is worth knowing if you have a nervous or very small dog.

Max: with no size separation, keep a close eye near the gate when new dogs arrive. That is where most scuffles start in an open, mixed-size field like this one.

Worth knowing

The basics are covered: a water bubbler, shaded seating and a gazebo with picnic tables, plus a few play obstacles scattered through the field. The nearby children's playground is a separate, on-leash zone, so keep the lead on through that part of the reserve.

Getting there

The reserve is on Chapel Street in Glenorchy, roughly a 17-minute drive from central Hobart. There is a free car park off Chapel Street, with a second access point from Moore Park Drive. Metro Tasmania buses run through the area if you are without a car.

Close by with the dogs

Finish with coffee at Agent Cooper, the dog-friendly espresso bar on Main Road a short drive away. If your dog wants more obstacles after this one, the Lake Claremont dog agility area adds another session, and Hobart Showground is the nearby pet-friendly base for travelling dogs.

Mornings and late afternoons get busiest, especially on weekends, so a weekday mid-morning visit is the quiet option. In summer, go earlier or later, because shade does not cover the whole field.
