Humphrey's Rivulet Walk

Humphreys Rivulet runs down from the foothills of kunanyi, Mount Wellington, through Glenorchy, and the fire trail beside it is a quiet bush walk where dogs must stay on a lead. Wallabies and pademelons are common, which is half the reason the lead matters.

Lead rules

Listed here as Humphrey's Rivulet Walk, the route sits across Wellington Park and Glenorchy City Council land. Dogs must be on a lead no longer than 2 metres at all times.

It is a water catchment and mountain bikes share the tracks, so expect riders coming downhill.

The walk

Expect a wide gravel fire trail through dry eucalypt woodland, with crossings over the rivulet. Some sections are steep, loose or muddy, so it is more of a workout than a stroll.

Getting started

Parking at the lower Chapel Street entrance is very limited. The end of Tolosa Street, near the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park, gives more room.

There are no dog fountains on the upper trail and very few bins, so carry water and pack out waste. The rivulet can run ankle-deep in winter, but it is catchment water, so discourage drinking from it.

For open space by the Derwent, Montrose Foreshore Community Park has off-leash exercise zones, and Saint Hugo’s is nearby for a coffee.

The woodland shade makes it a good warm-weather option. After rain, expect mud on the steeper pinches and give yourself extra time.
