Callala Wetland Walkway

Saltmarsh, mangroves and swamp oak forest line the Callala Wetland Walkway in Callala Bay, an easy walk of about 3 km return that takes roughly an hour. Dogs are welcome on lead the whole way.

The walk

The path mixes firm dirt track with stretches of timber boardwalk over the wetland. It is easy grade, so there is nothing tricky underfoot.

This is a birdwatching walk first, as saltmarsh gives way to mangroves and swamp oak with plenty of wetland birds along the way. Start near the corner of Chisholm Street and Sheaffe Street.

Leads and the beach

Shoalhaven City Council keeps dogs on lead along bushland reserves and walkways like this one. The off-leash stretches around Callala are on the beach, not in the wetland, so save the zoomies for the sand and check the signs at the trailhead.

Max: This is bird country. A short lead keeps your dog on the path and the wildlife undisturbed.

Make a day of it

Add the Callala Bay Foreshore Walk for a sea breeze, then grab a coffee at Vagabunda Collaborative.

Bring water for the dog. Calm mornings are the best time for the birds and suit dogs who like a slow, sniffy walk.
