Brisbane Koala Bushlands

Brisbane Koala Bushlands is a quiet stretch of eucalypt woodland and native grass trees off Alperton Road in Burbank, on Brisbane's southside. Dogs are welcome on-leash, and the reserve is a genuine koala habitat, which is exactly why the leash rule matters here.

The rules. Dogs must stay on a leash at all times. There is no off-leash area within the bushlands, so this is a walking-and-sniffing outing rather than a run. Keep dogs on the formed trails rather than pushing into the bush, both to protect wildlife and because the reserve is shared with horse riders, who get right of way.

The walk. The main option is the Stockland Creek Circuit, a 1.2km paved, easy loop suitable for most dogs and fitness levels. For a longer outing, the JC Trotter Trail and other natural-surfaced tracks extend further into the reserve, with rougher underfoot conditions.

What's there. The day-use area near the entrance has wheelchair-accessible toilets, shaded picnic tables, BBQs and an information hub with interactive displays. There is no drinking water on site for dogs or people, so bring your own bowl and supply, especially on the longer trails.

Getting there. The entrance is at 215 Alperton Road, Burbank QLD 4156. Free parking is available at the entrance. Public transport options are limited in this area, so driving is the practical way in.

Nearby with the dogs. There's no dog-friendly cafe right at the bushlands, but a short drive gets you to a few solid options: Little Black Pug Cafe in Mount Gravatt has a dedicated dog-friendly garden, Todd & Pup in Moorooka offers outdoor seating, and St Coco Cafe in Daisy Hill is dog-friendly with outdoor tables. Each is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away. Confirm current hours before you go.

Weekends and early mornings draw the most walkers, particularly in good weather. For a quieter loop, aim for a weekday afternoon. Good for dogs that are solid on a leash around horses and other trail users, and for owners happy to bring their own water.
