Brisbane Koala Bushlands

Brisbane Koala Bushlands is a quiet stretch of eucalypt woodland and grass trees off Alperton Road in Burbank, on Brisbane's southside. Dogs are welcome on leash, and this is one reserve where the leash rule has a real reason behind it: the bushlands are genuine koala habitat, with wallabies and birdlife through the understorey as well.

Leash status

Dogs must stay on a leash at all times; there is no off-leash area anywhere in the bushlands. Keep to the formed trails rather than pushing into the bush, both to protect wildlife and because the reserve is shared with horse riders, who have right of way. Pick up and bin waste to protect the creek lines, and keep the leash a standard one held by a handler rather than a long line trailing through the scrub.

Water and terrain

The easiest outing is the Stockyard Creek Circuit, a 1.2km paved loop suitable for most dogs and fitness levels. For a longer walk, the Brisbane Koala Bushlands Loop extends to roughly 6km through scribbly gums and ironbarks with creek crossings, and the natural-surface JC Trotter Trail runs further into the reserve. There is no drinking water anywhere on the network, so carry enough for both of you. Shade is patchy on the open sections, which matters in summer.

Max: no taps on any of these trails. Carry more water than you think you need and start early, the koalas have the right idea about midday.

Getting there and parking

The day-use entrance is at 215 Alperton Road, Burbank, with free parking at the gate. The day-use area has wheelchair-accessible toilets, shaded picnic tables, BBQs and an information hub. Public transport is thin out here, so driving is the practical way in. Vehicle gates are typically locked overnight, roughly 6pm to 8am.

Close by with the dogs

There is no cafe at the bushlands, but a short drive brings options: Botanicafe in Moorooka for an outdoor table. For another leashed bushwalk, the Daisy Hill Trails are southeast and also run through koala country. More southside options sit on the Burbank destination page.

Weekends and early mornings draw the most walkers, particularly in good weather; weekday afternoons are quieter. Good for dogs that are solid on a leash around horses and wildlife, and for owners happy to carry their own water. If the dog needs a free run after the walk, a fenced park in the city is the place for it, not here.
