Belmont-Adamstown Rail Trail

The Belmont-Adamstown Rail Trail is the Belmont end of the Fernleigh Track, a sealed, flat 15km path following the old rail corridor from Belmont through bushland and wetlands up to Adamstown. It is one of the easiest dog walks in Lake Macquarie: no gradient, plenty of shade in the bushland stretches, and you can do as little or as much of it as your dog is up for.

The rules. This is a leashed, shared path. Dogs must be on a short lead at all times and kept under control, because the track carries a steady stream of cyclists as well as walkers. Keep left, let bikes pass, and pick up after your dog. Steer clear of the picnic and children's play areas along the way.

The terrain. The surface is fully sealed and wide the whole way, which suits older dogs, prams and easy-going strollers. The Belmont end runs past wetland and open country; the mid-section through Whitebridge and Kahibah is leafier and more sheltered. There are occasional benches, but bring your own water, as taps are not reliably spaced along the trail.

Getting there. The Belmont trailhead has parking, and you can also pick up the track at street access points in Kahibah and Whitebridge if you want a shorter leg. The Adamstown end sits near Adamstown railway station for anyone coming by train.

Nearby with the dogs. Whitebridge, roughly midway, has dog-friendly cafes for a mid-walk stop. At the Belmont end you are close to the Lake Macquarie foreshore paths and a run of dog-friendly waterfront venues along the Pacific Highway.

When to go. Weekend mornings are the busiest, with cyclists and walkers both out early. For a calmer walk, aim for a weekday or an early start. Good for steady walkers and dogs that like a long, flat plod rather than a wide-open run.
