The short version. The Nyoongar Trail is a short bushland walk off Karnup Road in Baldivis, roughly 600m on its own and part of a combined 1.6km loop with the adjoining Don Shepherd Nature Reserve Trail. Interpretive signage along the way covers Noongar seasons and culture, so it is a gentle on-leash walk with something to read as you go.
The rules. Dogs are welcome but must stay on-leash, as this is a native-fauna area. This is not the nearby Baldivis Children's Forest, where dogs are not allowed, so make sure you are at the right trailhead. Use the shoe-cleaning brushes provided to help control dieback, stay on the path, and carry your waste out.
The walk. A flat, easy path of crushed limestone through Banksia, tuart and marri woodland. Short enough to combine with the Don Shepherd loop for a fuller outing. Spring brings wildflowers and orchids; watch for snakes in the warmer months.
Getting there. Free parking is available at the Karnup Road trailhead, with picnic shelters and BBQs on site. There is no direct public transport, so drive; it is about 10 minutes from central Baldivis. Take care turning onto and crossing the busy Karnup Road.
When to go. Early morning or late afternoon in spring is the pick for wildflowers and cooler air. It is generally quiet, busier with locals on weekends. Shade is patchy, so bring water on hot days. A good short cultural walk rather than an off-leash run.
